Inside Prisons

What are the goals?
Improve Parenting-Partners' ability to safely provide for their children's physical, emotional and developmental needs.

Increase incarcerated individuals' ability to create and maintain productive, law-abiding lifestyles.

How we accomplish this...
Provide educational experiences that create new beliefs, new thinking and new behaviors.

Reduce risk factors for violence and other problem behaviors in incarcerated individuals.

Strengthen Parenting-Partner relationships between inmate-fathers and their Parenting-Partners.

Nurture a sense of belonging, mastery, independence and generosity as participants support each other through learning, risk taking and accountability.

  • Families-Together
    • Provides skills and strategies for thoughtful responses in family relationships and conflict situations. Participants learn to create a safe environment where they can examine their lives, past choices, and the thinking patterns that underlie their behavior. Families-Together builds protective factors by improving participants' family relationships, enhancing interpersonal skills to support behavioral change and the development of new patterns of thinking.

  • Conflict Intervention
    • Provides training in specific skills for the management and resolution of personal and interpersonal conflict. Participants also learn a process for effective mediation/conflict resolution. The curriculum includes the general elements of conflict management while also addressing the special requirements of prison settings. The Conflict Intervention Process is a mediation model modified to address the unique needs of incarcerated individuals and correction's standards.

  • Growing with Your Brain in Mind
    • Is a project-based program that highlights some of the recent understanding of human brain development, function and learning, and assists each participant to apply that information to an identified goal. Each participant will identify one personal-growth goal (i.e. academic, interpersonal relationship, job search, financial planning), and then will make a plan to accomplish that goal while intentionally applying new information about the way people think, learn, relate and solve problems.
Instructor's Manual, participant handouts and evaluation instruments included.
  • Hot Topics
    • Requires the practice and application of interpersonal and communication skills while talking about relevant, emotionally charged real-life content. Since people disagree and argue about such things as biases and prejudice, parental responsibilities, social justice, faith and religion, and politics, and since active involvement in society results in the need to address these and other issues, participants will learn to respectfully and constructively engage in dialogue for understanding. Hot Topics is a sequel to the Families-Together and or the Conflict Intervention programs and is a pre-requisite for Institute's post-release phase.
Instructor's Manual, participant handouts and evaluation instruments included.
  • Awakening
    • Is a program for incarcerated men that fosters healing by facilitating the discovery of personal uniqueness and finding meaning from experience. Awakening explores the relationship of spirituality to mental and emotional growth. Participants look at old experiences (wounds) that are the basis for current beliefs and confront old thoughts that are the basis for current behavior.
  • Language for Understanding
    • Acknowledges the role of language in effective social interactions and the advantage that comes with the knowledge of a second language. The basis of this program is to learn Spanish in a relevant context. This course will be available as a self-taught program.
Video, written materials and compact discs are in production. A facilitator training element is in development.
